Mercedes has been dominating Formula 1 since 2014 and it is also the team to beat in 2019. For the 11th race this season, Mercedes has developed a one-off livery for a number of different reasons. It is not only the home race of the extremely successful brand, but Mercedes is also at the start as a factory team for the 200th time. The Stuttgarters also take the opportunity to celebrate the 125th anniversary in motor sport.
The livery through the years
The nickname of the team’s cars are “Silver Arrows” for a good reason. In the period between 1934 and 1939 the team was so successful that the press gave them this special nickname. The enormous speed of the cars in combination with the color of the cars made it an obvious nickname.
Since the return in 2010, Mercedes still uses the well-known “Silver Arrows” color. The details were often greenish and with a bit of black here and there. The livery has not been adjusted often in the last 9 years. The changes were often in the amount of that greenish color. Sometimes the Formula 1 car had a spot on the center of the car, other times it had a brighter line along the length. Mercedes also played every season with the black parts of the body, this year for example they have a lot of black on the back of the car. Did you know we made a Mercedes F1 2019 livery based T-shirt?
The one-off livery
As I already mentioned, Mercedes has three reasons to celebrate a party at the German grandprix. The Stuttgart brand has been the title sponsor of the event on the German circuit for years. In addition, this year it coincides perfectly with the 200th race start as a factory team. Super cool that this exactly happens on their home race! The third reason for a one-off livery is the fact that Mercedes is celebrating its 125-year anniversary in motorsport. This is also the reason why the team opted for a one-off livery. The front of the car is completely white.
In the past, before Mercedes was given the nickname “Silver Arrows”, all racing cars were delivered from the factory in exactly this white color. The livery is therefore a homage to the first racing cars that Mercedes has ever made. The team has decided that all the logos that reside on the white parts of the car had to blackened out. Also, they did replace the famous star by the classic star. The wipe and scratch effects make it look like the 2019 livery is being blew off the car which make the classic white under layer appear. This section extends to the side pods and halo.
